A Story About a GLBT Family

Life's Surprises are thoroughly played out in this enjoyable read by veteran writer Jackie Calhoun. Mallory Kerrigan is a divorced mother with two children, a son and a daughter. She shares custody of the teens with her ex-husband. Her ex has come out as gay, and her son is having great difficulty with that. Caitlyn meets Mallory when she signs over the deed to her house to her ex-husband. When they meet again the two women begin a friendship which results in Mallory inviting Caitlyn and her son to move in and share expenses.
Mallory's daughter, Zoe, is extremely displeaed at having to share their home with Caitlyn and her son. Zoe, at thirteen, is extremely self-centered. Life's Surprises is told in Mallory's voice, and in Zoe's voice. It's fun, as a reader, to see how each sees their world. I found Life's Surprises an enjoyable read, with great characters, and completely believeable teenage angst.

Definitely suprised.

Lets just say it is a lesbian romance which wasnt really clear on the product discription. Two women become friends and then one of them moves in with the other. the only problem is the kids well onlt 1 of the kids. Zoe hates her mothers new friend Caitlyn and cant stand her son.It doesnt help that Zoes dad comes out of the closest and moves in with his boyfriend ,her mother is heading the same way, she cant hang out with her gay male friend without both of them being harrassed and shes crushing on girls. It was actually a good story but for most of it I wanted to whack Zoe over the head with something big and heavy.

Pretty Good Story

So it was a good book. But here's the thing, I wasn't a huge fan of the daughters perspective. I respect the writing, because it was done really well from the daughters point of view, but I just didn't like it. That being said, I like the story between the adult women. I'm sure blending families is very difficult, especially when both characters were in heterosexual relationships before. I liked this story a lot, and I'm sure if you read the synopsis and were intrigued, you will too. Enjoy!
