How to survive the agonies of separation with children

This book is a new, revised and updated edition of the book of the same name originally published in 1980. Dr. Ricci heads the Statewide Office of Family Court Services for California'as 82 family courts and has been a licensed marriage and family therapist for 22 years. The material for Mom's House, Dad's House came out of her experience as a therapist and mediator, teaching seminars and classes for divorcing parents. From her students and clients she learned how difficult and complex it could be for divorcing parents to pull away from their former intimate relationships and reorganize their lives. The present volume is a distillation of all that Dr. Ricci learned in those early and in subsequent years. Its goal is to inform divorcing, separated, or remarried parents on how to constructively heal the wounds of separation and establish a healthy new life for their children. Dr. Ricci argues that, contrary to traditionally accepted beliefs that divorce means destruction of the family, a new kind of really workable and satisfying family life can be created for a child while parents maintain separate residences. Reaching this state is, however, not easy. It involves an understanding by both parents of their mutual goals, and much hard work at "pre-separation boot camp" to actualize these goals. This is a painful process where former intimacy is replaced by a business-like approach with the needs of the child rather than those of the parents being paramount. The rewards to all parties are, however, enormous. Fortunately, as difficult as the process of separation may be, Dr. Ricci leads us through it in great detail, dissolving commonly held myths, describing the various stages of separation and the problems inherent in each, how to set up separate residences and still maintain a "family," and the path out of our irrational negative intimacy to a rational relationship. Her points are well-illustrated throug the felicitous and ample use of quotes from clients. Also included are sections on the all-important legal side of separation and divorce and how to make it work for you, the divorcing parent, rather than for attorneys. The basic elements of parenting plans and agreements "the most important legal document when it is filed" are well-described in great detail and are alone worth the price of the book. Post-separation problems include those of the parent who fades out of the picture and their possible re-entry into the family relationship are well-described as are the wherefores of developing an extended family and acquaintance network, long-distance parenting, and difficulties involved in moving on. remarriage, dealing with "flashbacks" to the original relationship and former family life, and all the other problems one is likely to encounter even years after a divorce. Finally, for the layman who wishes to know more and for the professional, there are sections of detailed chapter notes, further reading, and appendices on information for your child's school, how to find a knowledgeable attorney, the costs of raising children, ideas for customized private clauses for private contracts, a mediation confidentiality agreement,and a guide for choosing child care. An index completes this exceptionally well-written and edited book. I have no hesitation in highly recommending Mom's House, Dad's House to anyone contemplating or involved in separation from a marriage. Indeed, I would even consider it must reading for anyone thinking of having children, to educate them as to the seriousness of bringing a child into the world. After all, you may be the one in two couples whose relationship will end in separation. My only regret is that this book was not yet in print when I separated from a former wife years ago when we had two children. Much emotional trauma all around could have been avoided or ameliorated if we had had Dr. Ricci's wisdom and practical suggestions then. Separation and divorce will never be a pleasure for anyone with children, but armed with MOM'S HOUSE, DAD'S HOUSE, it no longer has to take its vicious emotional toll. In both my professional life as a psychiatrist and in my personal life, I recommend this book to everyone. Richard A. Blasband, M.D.

Excellent resource for some, maybe not for others

When my wife told me she wanted a divorce, I almost immediately grabbed every book I could find on resurrecting a marriage and handling a breakup with kids. I had plenty of time to read suddenly, after all. I found this book to be not only the most effective in handling kidds, but probably contained the best advice on keeping the marriage together. Alas, it was not meant to be.

A key thing: my children's mother and I have always wanted to be civil with one another. I recognize that many relationships do not end this way, and many parents are abusive or neglectful. There are other books that are better for handling those types of situations. For example, "Where's Daddy?" by Jill Curtis is likely to be helpful for a mother dealing with an absent or abusive father; for me it was not very helpful.

This book can be key in helping a couple that doesn't want their divorce to turn so sour that they can't stand each other's sight. It is helpful in handling each parent's relationship with their children, and their relationship with each other.

If you are already hunkered down in the middle of a war, this book may not be right for you; if you are trying to avoid getting into that situation in the first place, this book should be at the top of your list.

In the process of my divorce, I checked every resource I could find - in libraries, at the book store, publications from organizations...
Most of them I skimmed and saved references to the useful information. This was about the only book that made me stop and read it from cover to cover.
It's incredibly complete, with realistic advice on how to approach each situation that arises.

Readers Find Suspense and Romance In true Christy Reece Style.

WHATEVER IT TAKES by Christy Reece continues the ongoing story of Grey Justice’s efforts to help people find the justice they deserve. The author introduces her female protagonist Kathleen Callahan, giving readers’ details of her backstory and her family’s tainted history. She helps readers understand Kathleen’s commitment to her sister who is on trial for murder. Readers meet Reece’s male protagonist Eli Slater, giving details of the Slater family and their criminal history. With the help of The Grey Justice Group, Eli Slater was able to clean-up the Slater’s businesses. Eli’s efforts to legitimize the Slater name made him and his two daughters, targets of Eli’s father’s enemies. Reece skillfully unfolds events bringing Kathleen’s troubles to Eli’s attention. Eli asks Grey Justice to reach out to help Kathleen. She describes Eli’s efforts to manipulate Kathleen’s future and how she decides to deal with his manipulations.

The author’s unknown antagonist enters her storyline seeking revenge against Eli and others. The antagonist has a keen interest in eliminating Kathleen and the entire Slater family. She adds several essential key support characters, giving readers details of each character’s backstory and their roles they play as they enter the storyline. Several subplots are built around cases of the Grey Justice Group. The subplots add direction changes to the story and it is interesting how Reece weaves them to be part of the main plot.

Reece keeps increasing the pace of the story involving readers in the events as they unfold moving the story’s focus on Eli, Kathleen, and Eli’s family and the dangers they face. Readers follow the growth of each character and the pace of the plot continues. The author provides a sense of family and relationships creating a story with characters coming to life as if readers are watching a motion picture. WHATEVER IT TAKES gives readers a story of suspense and romance and in true Christy Reece style, a breathtaking ending. A must read earning a ranking of 5-stars.

Another hit for Christy Reece!!

I received a complimentary book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This is the second book of the Grey Justice suspense series by Christy Reece, and it is absolutely fantastic. Once I started it I couldn’t put it down. By-the-way, I have to add that I had just been diagnosed with pneumonia and was bedridden during that time. In spite of that, I finished it in one day.

The heroine in this book is Kathleen Creighton whose sister is on trial for murder. Kathleen believes her sister has been framed and will do anything to help her sister. Unfortunately, the trial ends badly and Kathleen, now alone, moves on to join the Grey Justice Group.

The hero is Eli Slater whose family is made up of criminals. He and one of his brothers are the only “normal” family members. In fact, the criminals in his family were the “bad guys” in the author’s first book, Nothing to Lose. In this story, someone has threatened Eli and his two young daughters, and he wants to get a bodyguard for them while he tries to clear up this problem with him and his daughter. It turns out that he wants Kathleen to be his daughter’s bodyguards and reaches out to Grey Justice, a personal friend of his, to help him get her.

Thus begins one of the best romantic suspense book I have read since…okay – Nothing to Lose. The action, the suspense and the romance is non-stop. I do not want to give too much away, but there are twists and turns throughout the entire book. And I happily was not able to figure out the ending until I actually got there!

I definitely feel that you need to read Nothing to Lose first because we meet Grey Justice, Eli Slater and his family and other characters throughout that book. This adds significantly to the enjoyment of this book..
I highly recommend this book. Whatever It Takes is a roller coaster ride from beginning to end. And Grey Justice himself is so mysterious that I can’t wait to read his story. Unfortunately, I have a feeling that may be the end of the series. I sincerely hope not!

I started off my first review of the Grey Justice Series “Nothing To Lose”, with the following -

“Funny thing about humans is, at our best we can be the most noble of animals, but if not governed by law and justice, some tend to become the monsters of all monsters! Money, power and fame are not vices in the right hands, but once they get into the monsters’ hands, and innocent lives are at stake, it’s a different ball game.”

And the domino affect of this is the very essence of the following stories of the entire series written by Christy Reece.

As a member of that very evil family, Eli Slater has been working nonstop to clear the family name, destroy the traces of evil, leave the shadows of a past that threaten his future, and create a life for his two adorable daughters and the rest of his family. But when unforeseen threats bring danger and death to his threshold, Eli will protect his family…

Until his last breath – with whatever he’s got and “Whatever It Takes!!!”

I am a sucker for the underdog and the fallen rising with a vengeance to beat the odds, and of women who overcome their fears and betrayal to come out the other side with courage and integrity. For this alone Eli Slater will be one of my most favorite fictional characters and along with Kathleen, one of my courageous couples of fiction times!

And let me assure you that each book can be read as a standalone, but what fun is it if not knowing where it had all begun…

Puts some respect into a four-letter word

As the title suggests, Michael Sitrick is unabashed by the four-letter word that even most public relations professionals wince when hearing: Spin. With all of its negative implications, thanks to the media and entertainment industries who disdain the thought that they can be used to help attain an organization's objectives, Sitrick shows how he built a career and his own business by knowing how to use these industries to his advantage. What's more, he demystifies the process with nine basic rules that have guided his own success. These rules, however, are certainly not trade secrets and are in fact second nature (or at least should be) to any truly successful PR person who has dealt with crisis communication. Overall, the book is very entertaining and filled with many examples of how Sitrick has made a name for himself. For the un-indoctrinated into the world of spin, he makes it clear that this is not about misleading people or falsely manipulating the media, but rather about ensuring the perspective you want is effectively presented to the media and, thereby, considered by the public when forming opinions. For those who work in the field of PR, it reinforces concepts that every professional should have acquired, which isn't to say every professional is capable (or willing) of applying them. In fact, from my own experience, that person is extremely rare and difficult to groom within an organization, since they are often blinded by their own organizational culture and hierarchy from finding the root of the problem or becoming the driving force to overcome a crisis. This is the real beauty of Sitrick's book, since he tells you enough of how he goes about fixing problems to make you realize that you need that kind of PR focus as well during a crisis, but if you want it done right you're going to need someone with his expertise. The consummate PR professional, his book will leave you wondering how you could ever get along without him and his company.

The dean of spin reveals the secrets

Mike Sitrick's "SPIN" reveals the secrets and demonstrates that the media is not something to be "managed," as in the days of JFK. The author's examples are fascinating and provide ample proof to all of Corporate America that public relations is not what they might think it is. It's important to note that to handle a crisis in today's glare of intense media takes planning far in advance of that moment, as Sitrick points out so well. The examples he offers are obviously only the few he can talk about as his career indicates he's handled hundreds of confidential crises. This is an inside look at the work of an expert in a zone of the press people don't even know exists. After you read it you will ask yourself, "How many news stories influenced by experts?" Certainly, as Sitrick's book points out, the most famous bankruptcy in the history of this country, the Orange County Bankruptcy, was effected by the task force of Sitrick's company. There is no higher level of the media than that of "60 Minutes" and its unique primetime domain. This book is essential to a 90's understanding of the press and how it effects everyone. If you're in business, you should read it and then you should read it again. If you're not, read it twice.

Painfully difficult to read

This book is difficult to finish. Front cover to back the struggle of good vs evil is evident, drawn out and a downright struggle to read. I found myself hating to turn the page and move forward, because it seemed like there was no forward movement at all. Page after page of frustration to be culminated by a swift and totally unsatisfying ending. In no way was the finish worth the agony of reading this book and twisting and turning with the lead character page after page. Total frustration in print form. I was not pleased at all and kept wanting to skip to the end of this book to read the finale or just put it down, never to finish it at all.

All About Eve -- the Sequel??

Natty and Sean Wainwright are living a perfect life: college sweethearts, still in love, running a perfect hotel with perfect daughters. Sure, Sean's mother is a bitch, but she's away on a vacation. And sure, they're working their butts off, but their hotel is top rated with all the amenities. One daughter is off on a school trip in France; the other is safely tucked away at home. And Natty and Sean's dear friend Eve is coming to visit.

Then the perfect evening/friendship/life goes south. The daughter in France is gravely ill. Eve graciously offers to stay at the hotel and help Sean out. Natty rushes to her daughter's side.

And Eve rushes to Sean's side, fulfilling all his fantasies, being the perfect substitute wife and mother. And Sean falls for it, hook, line and sinker.

With all that, the book isn't really a mystery at all. It's a sordid scene of domestic bliss gone bad. But then there are secrets. Lots and lots of creepy secrets dating back to when the three first knew each other. These are the secrets that defined their friendship if, in fact, it could be called a friendship.

I found that Paula Daly has an excellent narrative voice. She tells a story fluidly, with rhythm. Her dialog sounds real. Her descriptions and insights are both humorous and evocative. She adds detail that make the story move --- like the tourists who used the in-room kettle to heat curry, or the little parking lot fracas.

Daly also draws some interesting characters -- quirky, insightful in their ways, unique, and interesting.

And she comes up with some creepily twisted secrets and backstory that make you question what lies beneath the surface of any "perfect" relationship. There are old liaisons and lies and deceptions and actions that are best kept secret.

What she doesn't do is tell a believable story. How could Eve have planned this little adventure? How could Sean fall so quickly and completely? How could everyone be so deluded? How could none of these secrets emerged earlier? Why would anyone keep a friend like Eve close?

It's an easy read. It's a fast read. It's an enjoyable read. But in the end it fails to satisfy.

Rancid Melodrama

This was one of those novels where none of the main characters is likeable. The psychotic serial-mistress villain (PSMV) is barely one-dimensional. Her PoV sections, written in third person by the omniscient narrator, reveal her as a bottom-feeding narcissistic predator with no redeeming characteristics. Husband Sean is a doormat of major proportions, easy prey for the PSMV since wifey has been neglecting certain aspects of their marriage. He doesn’t have his own sections but is slotted in wherever the author requires his confused presence.
Wifey, who narrates her own sections, is an obsessive-compulsive workaholic with an uncontrolled homicidal temper and a bottomless ability to justify her every action and thought. Not to mention too busy to work bedroom time for Sean into her crowded days, and too oblivious to recognize this is as a potential marital hazard. She also has a dark secret from her past that she is frantic to keep hidden from daughters Alice and Felicity, who exist mainly to provide a reason for the dark secret to be an important plot point.
The plot? Oh, you can guess that.
Borrow the book from the public library if you must, but don’t waste money on it.

About the Author
David Stevens-Castro grew up in Chile playing in the vineyards on his grandfathers farm and inspired by his Aunt and Uncles wine analysis laboratory. Fast forward a few decades, with a degree in Agricultural Science under his belt (specialising in fruit and wine production) and a passion for food and wine in his belly, David set out exploring Australia and enriched his career as a sommelier in several five star locations. These days he is a highly respected wine expert, whos admirable palate is regularly employed for food and wine selection and menu design. Meanwhile Fran Flynn honed her skills in all things creative in the Emerald Isle of Ireland - before setting off on adventures that meadered through five continents. After working her way up through many creative agencies, this award winning photographer and designer settled in Australia and has enjoyed ten years running her own successful business. Their worlds collided on the salty, sunny, romantic, stage of Byron Bay, Australia and eight years later (now living on the Gold Coast, Australia) they have combined their skills to present what they know and love with a narrative that is unique, compelling and accessible to everyone.

Beautiful and informative

"Paired," by the husband and wife team of David Stevens-Castro and Fran Flynn, is a beautifully put-together book that contains an informative discussion of sparkling wines and the foods with which they pair. As someone who is more familiar with craft beer and still wine (and their pairings with food) than I am with sparkling wines, I was glad to receive this book in exchange for writing an honest review. I was not disappointed.

The layout is excellent. The pictures of the food were taken by Fran, and they are positively mouth-watering. They made me want to try my hand at them, even if I didn't have any sparkling wine on hand with which to pair them. (The recipes that accompany these pictures may take a bit of work, but they are not all that difficult, which, as far as I'm concerned, is always a selling point.) But what impressed me the most is the amount of information on the different types of sparkling wines (e.g., champagne, cava, prosecco, moscato, etc.), the region they come from, how they differ, the different methods used to create the bubbles, and what terms such as extra brut, brut, sec, vintage, reserve, etc. mean. This book is a great primer on sparkling wines, spelled out in a way that is clear and easy to understand. I came away from this book feeling that I had gained a great deal of knowledge about something of which I had been quite ignorant.

The layout of "Paired" is stunningly attractive and shows that a lot of thought went into it. The book is attractive enough to be prominently displayed on the coffee table.

Having read this first volume, I'm definitely looking forward to seeing future volumes (on white wines and red wines), which the authors tell us are in the works.

Paired so well

Extremely well thought out and beautifully illustrated book. The idea may seem simple for most of us but sometimes is not. How to know to best put Champagne (or even to choose the right one in the first place) with the right food for the right occasion can be tricky or luck. Now there is a great reference to turn to when planning any occasion or simply to try champagne in a new light without it having to be just for a celebration which was my association before reading the book. Much about Champagne to explore now.

Every recommendation is thoughtfully considered and you can't but want to open a bottle and go eat some of the foods that are so visually palatable and stunning. The detailed information about the types of Champagne and correlation to foods are awesome. Thank you for the ideas, recommendations and knowledge shared.
