Great book, but don't buy if you have "Fighting Techniques of the Colonial Age"!

This is a great book, very informative, and with great illustrations.

Just BEWARE...this is exactly the same book as "Fighting Techniques of the Colonial Age." Same exact content. Different cover, title and publisher. "Fighting Techniques of the Imperial Age" was published by Amber Books Ltd and "Fighting Techniques of the Imperial Age" was published by Thomas Dunne Books, both in 2009.

I guess I should have thought of this because the time period is the same for both books (1776-1914), but I thought maybe the 2 books would have different information about the same period. Unfortunately not:)

Are you kinding me?

Out of the series, this book is terrible! 85% of the topics are the battles in Africa, Afghanistan, and India. Basically slaughtering people from third world countries.There is nothing about the War of 1812, Spanish American War or the Crimea War.

An excellant source for Arabic designs!

Ms. Wilson presents various elements of Arabic designs drawn mostly in black and white. She includes instruction for reproducing the designs and commentary on time periods and original colors used. The only thing that would have made this book better would have been pictures of the artifacts she refers to in her extensive documentation. A must have for anyone doing Islamic or Arabic arts!

Float Away and enjoy your body's knowledge

Reginald Ray's Breathing with the Body series of meditations and buddhist teachings are all beautifully organized, easy to listen to, helpful when practiced regularly, and absolutely the most amazing experience when listened to over time. I have probably listened to this set at least 30 times......sometimes when I'm awake and consciously practicing. Sometimes just to help me sleep and have beautiful dreams. Looking forward to continuing with these exercises for the rest of my life and adding more to my Reggie Ray collection as he completes more teachings.

A Great Work of Art

Reggie continues to refine his work and this program should properly be called a work of art. It is clear that it is the result of his continued process, bringing together Tibetan Buddhist teachings, as well as all of his other interests in Zen, Western psychology, neuroscience, indigenous traditions, his vast academic knowledge, etc, into one seamless whole. These practices are imminently concrete, accessible, and visceral. They are also revolutionary, not just for our "personal" practices, but also because they implicitly bring into question the basic foundations of our society/the modern world by allowing the soma to take its proper place in our lives. The way that he builds up the practices over the 12 discs, effectively zooming into and out of each specific nuance of each step, is incredible. In addition to the level of refinement itself, the fact that it is so easily accessible to anyone through audio recordings that can be listened to virtually anytime and anywhere is a historically novel situation, the impact and potential of which has not yet been fully understood.

Planning your tomato garden: Learn how to ensure the best yield and flavor. Not all tomatoes need the same care and culture, but a little forethought results in a tomato tapestry. (Craig also shares his best tips on how to grow the most seedlings using the least space, time, and resources. These tips alone make the book worth buying.) There is also advice to help you decide if you want to start your own seed or buy starts.

Growing tips: Do you want to grow in pots or beds? Should you stake your tomatoes or cage them? Should you prune? Not all tomatoes require the same growing conditions. Epic Tomatoes offers advice for more successful production.

Harvesting tips: Get peak flavor from all your varieties. For example, a pink variety ripens differently than a red or purple. Craig covers all of them, including multi-colored fruits. There’s even a few recipes to help you enjoy all your hard work.

Preserving and seed saving: Tips on storage, including canning, dehydrating, and freezing. Craig discusses roasting, which condenses flavor. I roast non-paste varieties, then add them to the sauce cooked down from my paste varieties, creating a sauce that reminds us of fresh summer harvest even in winter. I also freeze bags of roasted tomatoes to add to other dishes as needed.

Being a long-time member of Seed Savers Exchange, Craig includes tips on how to save your own seed. While he offers options, I recommend trying the fermentation method. It’s actually easier than other methods, allowing me to process many varieties with the least amount of effort.
Breeding your own varieties: This “extra credit” chapter has been very helpful to me. I’ve been breeding a heat-resistant paste variety for a few years, which in turn means a continuous supply of home-grown sauce. (When you grow your own, you can make your sauce taste exactly as you like.)

There’s great appendix material, including Craig’s research on yields for many open-pollinated and hybrid tomatoes. This information can save you time and frustration by helping you pick varieties more likely to give you the best yields for your effort. (I’ve copied his methods to produce my own spreadsheets to guide my own breeding project.)

Man ALIVE, I wish I had bought this book sooner!

This year, I decided to grow tomatoes (for the first time ever). With all of the info available online, I saw no reason to go in search of books.

At the advice of many online experts, I eventually spent quite a ridiculous amount of money on pots, grow boxes, soil amendments, lights... you name it. And -- this should come as no surprise to anyone -- the "experts" all contradicted each other. I followed the advice of one "expert" in my kind of tomato-gardening-difficult area (Pacific Northwest). Bad decision. As a result, I started my tomato seedlings indoors a month too early and six times as many seedlings as I should have started.

Eventually, thanks to more online recommendations, I bought a different book (Growing Vegetables West of the Cascades, 35th Anniversary Edition: The Complete Guide to Organic Gardening -- which contained a lot of interesting information, to be sure, but mostly only confused and discouraged me.

Then -- again thanks to online recommendations -- I checked this book out of the library.

Within two chapters, I knew that I had to buy a copy.

I'm now about 2/3 of the way through the book, and it just gets better and better.

This book is eminently readable. It answers ALL of my questions. LeHoullier spells out what to do, when to do it, and pros and cons of different approaches -- and explains WHY very clearly with just enough detail to make sense but not enough to have you saying "Enough already" and skipping parts.

At this point, thanks entirely to this book, I actually feel like my too-early start will be correctable. (I fixed the "too many" part by giving away dozens of seedlings.) I no longer feel overwhelmed and confused by online "experts" all offering contradictory advice. I only wish I'd bought this book to begin with, because I'd have saved myself a lot of money in unneeded (and, sadly, not returnable) supplies.

If you're embarking on a tomato-growing journey -- even if you're not doing it as cluelessly as I started off -- be smarter than I was, do yourself a favor, and start by buying this book. Seriously

This book is wonderful on several levels. First, the visual aspect is simply luscious. Well printed, gorgeous photos of lots of cool varieties of tomatoes that sent me scrambling to order seeds. But the meat of the book is the text, which is thorough, well-written, and contains lots of good info, tips and tricks, as well as history and science. An all around win!

Fun With Faldo

This book is published with Microsoft tags throughout the book. Using a tag reader it is possible to retrieve video clips from the internet providing smooth action instruction on exactly what the text is attempting to describe. However, my experience with this feature is mixed. Yes, the videos are nice, but I find myself watching a video and still wondering what the key points were within the swing to which I should direct my focus.

This brings us to the book itself. It contains many drills throughout the book that are intended to direct attention to particular parts of the swing. I am looking forward to warmer weather when I can go to the practice range and attempt to follow them with vigor. I must say, however, that I was somewhat disappointed in the section on driving. Mr. Faldo immediately jumps on the technology bandwagon and seems to become overly excited about electronic launch monitors and how great they can be for helping to diagnose a golf swing. Frankly, I don't have or want a launch monitor. I want to learn what a great shot feels like by observing the results of my swing and repeating what he is describing as keys to great play. After all, I can't carry a launch monitor around on the course with me, but I can imagine the kind of swing I want, and concentrate on key points.

Finally, useful tips are sprinkled throughout the entire book. Some of them come pre-highlighted in yellow, but these are not always what I would consider essential to my game. I plan to read the book at least two more times, each time with a different colored highlighter, and attempt to compile my own set of Faldo tips for the range and course.

All in all, I would guess this book would be a welcome gift to any golfer of any skill level.

A clear, concise easy to understand guide to swinging the golf club

I've been a Nick Faldo fan all of my adult golfing life and also have both his videos as well as his book "Golf the Winning Formula". 25 years ago when I purchased his first video I was a struggling 16 handicapper and with the help of the video and some coaching from a pro that taught Leadbetter's way of swinging the club I managed to reduce it to 5. I only found out about "A Swing for Life" recently and purchased it to see if his philosophies had changed at all and to help me through a bit of a swing slump that wouldn't go away. As always I found myself engrossed and doing drills as outlined in the book and my swing coming back online and I am maintaining my 7 handicap. From the driver to putting and beyond this book is a comprehensive learning tool that will suit a beginner to the well established low handicapper with its well written explanations and complimentary videos available by pointing your smart phone at the new tag system in the book. Highly recommended.

Much less mechanical view of the swing

This is one of the less mechanical golf books I have read, which surprised me based on Faldo's reputation for being mechanical. The text explains his approach. There are less drills than some other books, but each drill described is well chosen from the myriad of options of contorting yourself to get a "feel". I read this on an old-fashioned Kindle, so missed out of the the connected film clips when reading (I downloaded them into YouTube).
Overall, I liked the book, it gave me a small set of focused drills for the range and doesn't encourage over-thinking.
