This edition is great--succinct. I like it because I can take it anywhere discreetly. The only criticism I have is that it is just a wee bit smaller than I would like--but I can certainly live with this given the great job done on the information in this edition. I ordered the other two after I got this.

About the Author
JAMES S. REED is Professor of Ceramic Engineering at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Typo Ridden Text

An elective course I am taking gave problem sets out of this book, so I purchased it to be able to do the homework.

I have only read the portions of the book that pertain to the assigned homework problems. Although this amounts to only a paragraph or two per week, I consistently find that there are typos and inconsistencies in what little material I read.

I can't speak for the whole body of this book, since I do not plan to read the rest of the text. But based on my experience, I can only assume that the rest is just as error riddled as what I have read.

My recommendation is to use the book lightly so that you can resell it afterwards. I would feel much more comfortable using lecture notes or wikipedia as a reference instead of this book.

Tedious

I used this text for a materials graduate class and found it to be one of the most tedious texts that I have used to date during my undergraduate or graduate education. While apparently comprehensive relative to the subject, the material is not well organized and, at times, has a stream of consciousness flavor to it. It drones on and on with qualitative comments intermingled with quantitative; the graphics are one-dimensional and exclusively black and white. The whole text has a very dated feel, which may be reflective of its 1995 copyright. In general, I found this text to be difficult to read for any length of time. Conversely, I have been exposed to other texts that engage the reader and pique your curiosity to go further. Reed doesn't do that, in fact, I found myself becoming less interested in ceramics than before I began the class!

If you are using it for a class, there is not much you can do, but if you have a choice, this isn't the ceramics text to chose.

Nose to tail - a utilization of innards.

This book is really written for the restaurant industry. Some of the preparations are really for professional chefs, butchers and kitchens. Nonetheless, it's a good read. If you grew up with a family that traditionally ate tongue, kidney, liver, pickled pigs feet, tripe, pigs ear, you might think that the author has come to the table a little late and wonder what the fuss in about. Although I have yet to try any of the recipes (I have a few of my own up my sleeve - or my grandmother's) some read yummy and some I'm not so sure about. Cooking it up is the only way to find out! If you're bored with steak, think the meat counter at the store is a monotony of the same stuff all of the time (you're right), then this book might open a whole new world for you. One of the problems you will face is where to find some of the ingredients. If you live near an "enthnic" neighborhood butcher shop (do they still exist in our U.S. homogenized food culture?) you may find what you need, or you may have to special order some of these cuts of meat. It could be a fun adventure!

OK- I want to cook almost all of these recipes. (I make exceptions for brains and sweetbreads.)

All the rest though? Brilliant. I plan to start a salted and dried pork liver in the next couple of days.

Also- if you want to do a proper haggis for Burns Day- here's a recipe!

More seriously- though I may try a haggis at some point- there's a really thorough discussion of confit and how we can do it.

I have never thought I'd want to cook tripe... but I'm getting intrigued.

This book really encourages one to expand beyond one's usual preconceptions. Even before getting the book, I've tried a couple of the more conventional recipes, and they've been great. I look forward to trying the catsup recipe- I've been looking for a solid catsup recipe that would substitute for commercial.

Recommended, even if only for inspiration!

This book, gives new insight and complete descriptions on the cooking of uncommon foods. I totally recommend this book to those who want to "know absolutely everything" and was too scared to ask!

This work provides information on such things as geometric sections, beams, trusses, arches, plates, etc., often under various loading conditions. Its chapter on frame analysis is notable. Also featured are such things as building foundations, pipes and tunnels, soils, retaining structures, etc.

Condensed convenience

This is a very handy little book. Properties of plane areas, basic vibration, beam formulas, plates w/ various b.c.'s, foundations, frames, arches, earth retaining, pipes & tunnels. Think of it as a specialized, watered down Roark's with more than a few hidden gems. It was extremely useful in my exam and is still very used as a quick reference or for basic first passes and superpositions for more complicated problems.

I humbly suggest that the review mentioning units is unfounded. The book is unitless as far as I've seen, aside from the examples. The examples use metric units.

Sure, they had occasional run-ins with the police, but in the affluent town of Glen Ridge, it was understood that boys would be boys. Their parents always paid the damages, and the affairs were kept politely quiet. When 13 of these young men were accused of sexually assaulting a mentally disabled girl, the town rallied behind them and did its best to ostracize the girl. It is a case that is still generating headlines today, and Lefkowitz has written a compelling account of the incident and the resulting trials. He examines a part of American culture that appears to condone wildness and aggression in its young males and passive servitude in the females. Our Guys is an insightful work that could be as fundamentally important, and as widely read, as Mary Pipher's Reviving Ophelia (1994). Highly recommended. Eric Robbins

Long read, well worth it.

Yes as some other reviewers mentioned it is a long book. It needs to be in order to dissect the sickness of this community. In addition to the main storyline, the story of "Ryan's Wreck" also made me sick to my stomach. Who thinks it is OKAY to do such things?! This book delves deeply into "privilege." I live near a community very similar to Glen Ridge. This author is spot on in descriptions of such areas. What floors me is how many of the parents involved had no idea their lovable little moppets were capable of such deeds. And it wasn't just the guys, as Mari Carmen Ferez (sp?) demonstrates. If you have seen the movie, the book does follow closely (the book came first is my guess).

insightful and disturbing analysis of a culture that exists

I grew up in a community next to Glen Ridge that modeled similar values to those in the book. I left in '67 to join the Peace Corps and my own beliefs that the values portrayed in those seemingly perfect lives were self serving and morally wrong were affirmed by my experiences in the world. I mistakenly moved back to another neighboring community next to Glen Ridge from New York when I had a child twenty years later. Like the Fabers*, I wanted my child to be safe and have a beautiful green place to play like Brookdale Park. I took my young child to Carteret Park in a stroller many afternoons to play on the jungle gym. After a few years living there and at the beginning of my child's school age, it became clear that the faces in these communities had changed, but the shallow values were still there. We didn't join the Peace Corps again but we feel grateful that we could, as teachers, raise our child in an international community in an Asian country where the Glen Ridge values of 'look good, have heaps of money and bully other people/kids around' still come from all over the U.S. but they are balanced by children from 50 other nations who bring a rich diversity of cultures and languages to a third culture community. I will always be indebited to you Bernard Lefkowitz for affirming my terrible adolscence as something that was wrong with the educational system and the adults in charge, not me. My family tried to do the right thing in striving to place us in a good community and in the end, it worked out. I am living in the world and teaching my child and others to respect and honor all peoples. Your observations cut to the core of my experience, many of which I still remember as being painful ones of exclusion for one reason or another, never valid ones. The denial that this community sustained is sickening as is the 'jock worship' witnessed by all the truly good kids who suffered these boys' sick bullying behavior as young children and in middle school right on through high school and into college. The book is eminently important for parents of both girls and boys and for all educators as we move into the increasingly problematic twenty first century. We all need to be watching the children, all the time.

A frightening expose of life in suburbia

This book exposes the dark and frightening underside of a life of supposed tranquility in the lily white and privilged confines of suburbia, and details how "the boys will be boys" mentality led to the awful rape of a retarded girl by high school jocks and how a town that glorified its male, so-so high school athletes, could somehow defend the conduct of the jock-rapists and could blame the victim as a slut and a Lolita seductress. Compelling reading and a real page turner that deserves to be a best seller!

Fantastic read. Especially for aspiring ad designers

Fantastic read. Especially for aspiring ad designers. The little details on how this massive campaign became a staple of advertising are fantastic and make for a great read. I've gotten 3 copies now to give to graphic designer friends for gifts, they've all loved this book. It breaks down each design and the process of how that particular ad and concept came to be and how it relates to pop culture or the likes relative to that time period. Very inclusive.

Best coffee table book!

I love Absolut ad's and have always wanted to get one. They are expensive new , so I got an used copy from an amazon seller. It came quickly and I flipped through the book for about 20 min when it arrived 2 days later. I love all the ads and they are all so clever. I might not get some of the modern art ones, but I love the city ones in particular. Anyway, I got this book for my new house and new coffee table book, I think it is one of the best hardcover coffee table book (marketing story book) ever.

This is a terrific book, with information about how the wonderful Absolut vodka advertising campaign began. The real strength of the book is the collection of images. In some cases, looking at an entire campaign all together takes something away from the individual ads. This is not the case for these advertisements -- taken together, they are even cooler than they were in their original magazine contexts.
I just hope they will do a second volume when there are enough new ads to justify it.

About the Author
Professor Simon Judd has been a member of staff at Cranfield since August 1992, and has managed and/or procured most of the biomass separation MBR programmes conducted within the Centre since that time. He has been principal or co-investigator on three major UK research council-sponsored programmes dedicated to MBRs with respect to in-building water recycling, sewage treatment and contaminated groundwaters/landfill leachate, as well as two EU-sponsored MBR programmes (EUROMBRA and MBRTRAIN). He has also managed projects in membranes for potable and industrial water treatment, as well as in water recycling.

As well as publishing extensively in the research literature, Simon has co-authored three textbooks in membrane and MBR technology. Invited presentations at international membrane conferences have included five keynote papers. He has also provided consultancy to clients based in Denmark, Finland, Japan, Korea, North America, Switzerland and the UK, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

perfect book for learning and using scales

This book opens me the way of playing the harmonica in other styles then blues. It shows the usability of different scales, and how they sound, special when I play over the additional sound examples from David which are perfect mixed and varied. I use it also in my live jam sessions. The training book of him to this encylopedia i can recommend also to make the next steps between learning theory and playing. In real harp-trainings with a teacher it helps me also to find the bottle-necks in my playing technics and getting easier what I didn't understand in theory.
