A Catechism of Christian Doctrine, Prepared and Enjoined by Order of the Third Council of Baltimore (or, simply, the Baltimore Catechism) was the de facto standard Catholic school text in the United States from 1885 to the late 1960s. It was the first such catechism written for Catholics in North America, replacing a translation of Bellarmine's Small Catechism. In response to criticisms, various editions include annotations or other modifications. The Baltimore Catechism remained in use in nearly all Catholic schools until many moved away from catechism-based education, though it is still used up to this day in some. In the nineteenth century, repeated efforts had been made in the United States towards an arrangement by which a uniform textbook of Christian Doctrine might be used by all Catholics. As early as 1829, the bishops assembled in the First Provincial Council of Baltimore, Maryland decreed: "A catechism shall be written which is better adapted to the circumstances of this Province; it shall give the Christian Doctrine as explained in Cardinal Bellarmine's Catechism (1597), and when approved by the Holy See, it shall be published for the common use of Catholics" (Decr. xxxiii). The clause recommending Bellarmine's Catechism as a model was added at the special request of the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith. It may be mentioned here that Bellarmine's "Small Catechism," Italian text with English translation, was published at Boston, in 1853. The wish of the bishops was not carried out, and the First and Second Plenary Councils of Baltimore (1852 and 1866) repeated the decree of 1829. In the Third Plenary Council (1884) many bishops were in favor of a "revised" edition of a 1775 catechism by Irish Archbishop Butler, but finally the matter was given into the hands of a committee of six bishops. At last, in 1885, was issued "A Catechism of Christian Doctrine, Prepared and Enjoined by Order of the Third Council of Baltimore." Although the council had desired a catechism "perfect in every respect" (Acta et Decr., p. 219), theologians and teachers criticized several points (Nilles, "Commentaria", II, 265, 188). Soon various editions came forth with additions of word-meanings, explanatory notes, some even with different Arrangements, so that soon there was a considerable diversity in the books that go by the name of Baltimore Catechism. The Baltimore Catechism became the standard text for Catholic education in the United States

It's decent

I got the feeling the book assumes you know a little bit about Internal Auditing before taking the class. Some of the questions at the end of chapters were tough to understand until further chapters were read.

Ive learned five chapters of the books so far and right now I can say that this book definitely isn't the best I've had. First off the authors seem to think that you have an understanding of internal auditing from the way they wrote it. As a graduating senior majoring in accounting i had no knowledge of what an internal auditor was or what they even did. So the book is very unclear at times.

With regard to the homework questions, it is often difficult to find the answers because the answers don't always come from what it says in the text. The questions may be worded differently so you get confused as to what answer they are looking for.

It is definitely not an easy read. It isn't the type of book like some I've had that put you to sleep, but you will really need to read the chapters a few times to understand what is being said.

This textbook is not the best textbook for entry level internal audit classes. I think they need to dumb down some of the jargon and writing to make it understandable to students who are new to learning about internal auditing.

Not a good book. Very bland writing on the part of the author team (looks like a ton of people contributed to the book.) The info within it is accurate but it largely seemed like all the chapters basically said the same thing over and over again. "It is not the internal auditor's job to detect risk or conduct ERM; their job is to make sure all of the internal controls work, and to give assurance to top management that they work." This book will not teach you how to become a good auditor, nor will it teach you more than the very basics of the fine art of internal auditing.

Good old book, with a lot of helpful information

I first ran across the name of this book, and the name of its author, in the book called "Good Grief" by Granger E. Westberg. Having gotten some value out of Westberg's brief book, but wanting more information, I initially bought this book just for the one chapter that Westberg's book said was so great. And yeah, once I had the "Peace of Mind" book in hand, I found that one chapter, alone, ("Grief's Slow Wisdom") made this book's price well worth it to me.

Excellent book, "Peace Of Mind" by Joshua Loth Liebman, that I will have to read again. Even though this has happened to some extent, it is fascinating to read this book. In it, the author is calling for an alignment, common respect, and better understanding between religion and psychology. But the book goes further in getting us to look at ourselves in different areas. It almost seems impossible to not have these two great forces that help mankind working together. One of the greatest quotes on tolerance I ever read "I do not agree with what you say, but I defend your right to say it to the death" is in this book. Just got an original copy of the follow up book "Hope for Man". Looking forward to reading it.

A very incomplete, but interesting book

This book is very good at showing how basic fracture mechanics can be used to understand real fatigue and fracture problems in construction grade steels. The down side to this book is that the authors tend to promote their point of view and give little attention to other points of view. For example the authors spend numerous pages on their CVN to fracture toughness prediction method, yet give the master curve method only a few sentences, and ignore most of the other 20 some CVN to fracture toughness prediction methods that can be found in the literature. The reader might want to also keep in mind the most of the information in this book is based on late 1980's technology in the U.S. construction steel industry.

Mechanical and aerospace fatigue/fracture engineers will probably not find much useful information in this book.

A "practicing engineer's" Fracture Mechanics!

This is an excellent book for the practicing engineer who wants to use fracture mechanics to solve fracture and fatigue problems used in industry today. The author explains fracture mechanics and fatigue in terms the practicing engineer uses on a daily basis. For example, different material properties used in fracture mechanics are compared to Hook's Law, yield strength, and tensile strength, material properites common to structural engineers.
Also, the author gives precise definitions of fracture and fatigue, how it can be used during the design phase, why structures fail structurally, and how to use fracture and fatigue analysis to solve these real-life problems.

Haynes Repair Manual for Mini Cooper was great!

I had to have the AC compressor replaced on my 2003 Mini Cooper. A local shop which specializes in BMWs and Minis priced the job at $1650 plus. At the Mini dealership the price would have probably exceeded $2000. One reason for the high price was that the OEM AC compressor was $1200, and the shop would only use this part. On line I found a new OEM compressor, clutch, evaporator and other required parts for $400. I then found a local shop which does not specialize in Mini repair. They would only do the work if I removed the modular front end from the Mini which was required for an AC compressor replacement. I read the Haynes manual and removed the modular front end in less than 3 hours. I then took the car to the local non specialty shop. They replaced everything , but the parts did cost $450, which included recharging the system with Freon and oil. The labor was $200, so I saved at least $1000 for ,4-6 hours of my own labor. I am somewhat mechanically inclined but could not evacuate the Freon or test the electrical systems, so I left this to the professionals, but my labor saved me at least $1000; and I could never have figured out how to remove the modular front end of the Mini without the Haynes Manual.

OK, but Not the Best

This manual is useful and inexpensive, but NOT the best, more detailed or most complete. In places, it is pretty generic.

I strongly recommend the manual from Bentley (publisher), as it is considerably more complete. Yea, the Bentley manual costs more, but if you are doing something more complex than a brake job (which you could probably do without the manual), the additional detail is very helpful.

So, rather than buy this manual, and then decide that you do not like it and finally wind up buying the manual from Bentley, just get the manual from Bentley in the first place.

The book itself is just fine. Be warned it's an exact copy of Chilton's mini cooper repair manual. If you were hoping to get two different books to cover more ground you're out of luck.
