Seamus Heaney is an Irish treasure in literature. His works display the "concrete reality" that he aimed for in his poetry. My favorite poem is "Digging". He is talented in fusing agric./pol./soc./religion themes together in one poem.

I have not read all of these poems as yet as each one calls me to read it over and over. Heaney's startling analogies and humorous twists charm me and shake me up. Listen to Heaney's music in "the pedal treads hanging relieved of the boot of the law" in describing a constable's bicycle.

Heaney's "Selected Poems" shows a good picture of the poet's development up to "Station Island" and the sonnets of Glanmore and Clearances. Like Yeats, Heaney had to go through a few volumes before he "became good": except for "The Tolland Man," the poems selected from his first four collections are flat, even the much-anthologized "Digging," which perseveres in anthologies only because it illustrates Heaney's overall philosophy. With the bog poems from "North," Heaney comes into his own, and he has managed to remain at this consistent level of excellence since then.

The Dollar's Future

I enjoyed this book very, very much. Most all "peak oil" books are written by liberal democrats that are on the far left. This is just one point of view. I dislike this Republican and Democrat rat race and I think it's pointless. If you like rich Republican elite fine. If you like rich Democrat elite fine. I could care less. This only clouds our thinking and that thinking becomes group think. Think for yourself. This author William R. Clark is a liberal democrat but I liked his book and he has some important things to say, but that doesn't mean I agree with Mr. Clark on every issue. How many BTU's of energy does the average Republican American use each year? How many BTU's of energy does the average Democrat use each year? We are the same. We have all of the electricity, natural gas, and gasoline we want and can waste it any time we like. I researched Mr. Bush invading Iraq. Mr. Saddam Hussein wanted the U.N. Scantions lifted. France, Russia, China, Germany and others were selling him billions of commercial and military equipment. Mr. Hussein gave France, Russia, China, and Germany and other countries hundreds of drilling contracts each if these countries would help get the U.N. Scantions lifted. France went further and got Mr. Hussein to switch pricing of oil from dollar to euros. Iraq, Russia, France, Germany, China were all trying to screw the United States and end it's power and influence. This was a direct challange to the economy of the United States. According to the author William Clark, this would have recked the United States Dollar and economy. The dollar would have dropped more than 40% overnight. Markets would have crashed. The government fears deflation. With the United States huge debt burden, our country cannot afford deflation, as it would bankrupt the system almost instantly. You have to keep the gravy train moving and do crazy things to create inflation. What causes inflation? Wars and devalue your currency. I don't know what the correct answers are. Ask yourself, if you were president, what would you have done? Mr. Bush went to Iraq and tore up those oil drilling contracts that were given to the Russians, Chinese, French, Germans and others. U.N. scantions were lifted and Iraq's oil is starting to find it's way back into the global market. Will this work? Maybe not. The dollar is doomed and Republicans and Democrats have given us 50 years of spending and debt. National debt, State and Local Government debt, Corporate debt, personal debt and the money supply and debt pile keep growing and growing regardless what we believe and regardless who we vote for. Just pointing to one political party and calling them Nazis and other names doesn't solve anything. Global oil production has peaked and we will see a global decline in net energy over the next 25 years. But what would you have done if you were President? Stayed home and put up windmills? In one months time I have gone from playing a strong high E to a triple G.
My only regret is that I haven't had the time to drive up to Dallas to study with him.

Fufillment is the path to weight loss.

Its disguised as a diet book, but in reality its a book about self "fufillment". Like I'm sure so many people in the world do, when they get stressed, they turn to food.

This book opened my eyes to the habits that probably 90% of people do. Instead of eating to fufill a need, because we're bored, angry, tired, or depressed, Deepak tells you to take a step back, take a deep breath and do some soul searching "what do I really want with my life?" .

Don't get me wrong there's plenty of diet advice.... Deepak gets you to be aware of what you eat, and that you're allowed to eat crappy food every once in a while. Cold turkey NEVER works when dieting, it only leads to crash and burn.

Overall amazing book and made me buy some of his other work.

brilliant insights and practical nutrition

This is another classic Chopra volume and it has many facets integrated into its diverse insights.
Deepak is returning to the issues of health and happiness and now food as a complex and yet basic system
requiring mindful living and practice.

Nothing can be more basic than "food and nutrition and taste" and the many elements associated with food including emotions and relations.
I bought this book the day it was released and have listened to the audio version two times already ( by the 2nd day it was out)

In this brilliant book Dr. Chopra uses his medical background as well as his studies in Ayurveda and nutrition sciences and also current research about GMO's and organic vs non-organic in a non-dogmatic , yet precise manner to inform and enlighten the reader in some of the new intricacies of food politics and advertising.

He then offers solutions for the SAD diet and the processed sugar and fat laden lifeless food of the market while listing a colorful array of alternatives which draw much from the seeming less endless array of raw and fresh fruits and vegetables (and their rich content of phyto-nutrients) and other plant material and other wise choices for those seeking a real food alternative to "diets" that don't work. Dr Chopra uses the Phrase "Awareness eating to Awareness living"

Yet just when this seems to be a book about diet and fresh foods and choices it starts a rich pattern of integrating all aspects of "nourishment" in the broadest sense and continues to integrate the many aspects of living that and lifestyle as well as habits that can affect our well-being. I have been a 100% raw living foods vegan for 40 years now so i was especially pleased to hear much devoted to "phyto nutrients and fresh foods"

The book then investigates all of the aspects of consciousness and living which can have effects on the quality of life and ultimately on one's happiness and balance.

Included in this book is much contemporary research on biochemical as well as psychological factors involved n the many levels of "nourishment" As always with Deepak Chopra's work the key is mind-body-and spirit, the Trinity. And true to his roots in Indian culture. Deepak brings back the insights of the science of Ayurveda to broaden the definitions of and insights into holistic nutrition as well as
lightening and enlightening the mind and body in a "full spectrum" approach.

The review of emotional well-being and Self-regulation reviews many delightful and informative views on maintaining inner perspective and mindfulness . Throughout the book Deepak uses a lovely phrase "lightness of Soul' which aptly describes the freedom from emotional-psychological and physical burdens and toxins.

The last section of the book has many recipes and suggestions for meals and food preparations from the Chopra kitchen and center.

Make no mistake, this is no mere food-diet-menu book. It truly draws upon the wisdom of many philosophies and sciences and modern science as well.

I highly recommend this book from Deepak because it weaves together the practicalities of diet and food as well as the issues behind eating and the practices we can integrate to produce optimum health and nutrition as well as the practices needed for balance and insight..

This is a terrific book. I spent a year in Budapest, and for 7 months I studied Hungarian there with one of the authors, Erika Solyom. One thing that really impressed me is that I actually heard people on the street and in shops saying things that are in the dialogues (which I memorized). Unlike the standard "ou est la bibliotheque" approach I've encountered in other books I've used (to study French and German) - i.e., teaching you how to speak English in another language - this one helps you speak the way actual Hungarians do. The CDs are extremely helpful in mastering pronunciation, which can be tricky for English speakers (Hungarian has sounds we just don't have). The recorded dialogues feature real Hungarian speakers speaking like real Hungarians in real-life situations. The book also contains a great deal of information about the structure of the language, so you're not just learning to parrot without really understanding what's going on. Hungarian is a difficult but fascinating language. This book is a great way to begin to crack the code. (It also features a screenplay-worthy plot running through the dialogues!) Highly recommended!!

Honest Book!

I stumbled upon this book on Instagram. It was recommended by a mother I follow. I feel like unexpected tragedy has been a theme on the outskirts of my life lately. I keep hearing about and seeing all these stories of people who are just chugging along living their ordinary lives one moment and then BAM! in a split second heartbreak slams them in the face and there is nothing they can do to go back. Life is different now. They had no warning that their lives might change and then it hits like a tsunami and they are just riding it out.

It kind of blows me away how quickly life can change and how much we really are not in control of things. It’s really not a question of if life will throw us some big curveball down the road. Life throws curveballs and no one is immune. The question isn’t if it’s when and how–how we will handle it. I bought Jason’s book on a whim and finished it quickly.

What I liked:

1-This book is easy to read. It feels like you’re having a conversation with someone or reading their journal. No jumbled up sentences or flowery language. My favorite books are those that feel like you’re learning about someone over a glass of wine and this one definitely felt like that.

2- I liked how REAL Jason was. I liked how he was vulnerable and didn’t feel pressured to wrap this story up with a bow. There was no “I struggled with God because my son died, but NOW I’ve figured it out and we are good.” Nope. He continues to struggle with God and has lots of unanswered questions and he may always struggle with God. But, that doesn’t mean he isn’t waking up each day and trying. He’s asking those questions and going to church and helping others and loving his family and praying and searching– and if we’re being honest I think that’s all God really wants, right? He loves us. He wants for us to love Him back. He wants for us to try. He knows what we are capable of and He does not ask for more than that.

3-I read my favorite quote of all time EVER in this book. I don’t know if this is a thing that I just so happened to miss and everyone else already knows this, but it made me lose my breath for a second when I read it: “You don’t have to move mountains, just pick up a pebble.” Woah. Wait. Wow. I love that. I love it so hard. I don’t know why I tend to always think of things as all or nothing. “I can either change someone’s life with my kindness or do absolutely nothing.” That’s a crazy way to think! I don’t need to change someone’s life everyday (thank God, because I’m so not). All I need to do is to pick up a pebble. A little kindness goes a long way: a note in the mail, a text, a meal dropped off, a “how are you” conversation. Little things. I need to do more of the pebble work!

What I didn’t like: I think maybe this story could’ve been told more chronologically. There was a bit of jumping around in time and it was hard to follow his emotional timeline, but I bet when you go through something like that time tends to all fog together and you don’t know what’s what.

The verdict: I think this one is worth buying. It helped me to remember that life isn’t really all that tough if I miss a nap. Jason had some good God questions and he got some good God advice. He asked questions that I bet you’ve asked before (even if you haven’t been personally touched with tragedy) and he outlined what is (and what is not) helpful for those in the thick of sadness.
