I first read this as a grade-schooler, as the condensed version in Reader's Digest, and later found the full edition at a book fair. It is one of the most fascinating, and frightening, books I have ever read.

Paul Ehrlich's "The Population Bomb" postulated a worldwide pandemic of this disease which killed off 1/4 of the earth's population a la "The Stand", but it would not happen this way; the virus mutates and weakens too readily.

Some other updates on key players in this book:

Rose and Lily "Penny" Pinneo are retired and live together in Sebring, Florida.
Dr. John Hamer and his wife, Elsie, live in Fort Wayne, Indiana and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Dr. Wilbur Downs died a few years ago.
The author, John Fuller, died in 1991.
I was unable to find Dr. Sonja Buckley online. (Edit, 3/2/06: Dr. Buckley died in 2005.)
Jos, Nigeria is in the throes of civil war. Nigeria has not been affected by AIDS as profoundly as other African countries, but it is a significant problem.

The book is a relatively quick and easy read. Although it is out of print, it is not hard to find.

Reads like a first class suspense novel.. and you swear you experienced it all first-hand after reading it.. good, accurate science.. nice history on CDC and other agencies and the way things were handled during this time frame.

Ebola continues to be a threat given the current news about the Missionaries working through Samaritan's Purse who have contracted the virus.

A Helpful Guide to Balance & Healrh

Dr. Sonica Krishan, author of the well-written book Healing through Ayurveda, Tips for Understanding Dosha and Self Care, provides clear, concise information on the three humors or personality types of vatta, pitta, and kapha in part one. She provides checklists and descriptions of personality factors or conditions that invite all people of Eastern and Western cultures to identify their personal traits and patterns. The Self-Identity Questionnaire is especially helpful in recognizing aspects like climate preference, mental ability, and emotional tendencies. We don't usually consider that we may be sensitive to temperature, specific herbs or need social or emotional skills to balance our personality traits.

Moreover, in part 2, Dr. Krishan encourages balance in temperament and lifestyle and even the daily habits of eating, breathing, and exercise. She reminds the health-conscious reader that some simple application of herbs or exercises through breathing and yoga make all the difference in the world to our health, longevity and happiness.

I enjoyed this book immensely, and you will enjoy it also. Healing Through Ayurveda is a reference book to keep nearby and refer to when you feel out of balance. Highly recommended.

Great BooK!

This was a text used in class, and while the teacher did mostly lecturing without the text, it was a great resource-easy to understand, and highly applicable. THe text does a great job of really explaining the material in a clear and concise manner.

pleasantly surprised

I bought this for an International Marketing course which actually required the 6th edition. Instead of paying $90+ for the newer version, I paid about ten dollars. The page numbers are different from the new version but the content is almost exactly the same. Most of the case studies in this book are the same as in the new version, but there are two are three in the 6th edition that aren't in this edition. I haven't had any troubles using this edition in place of the newer one. The book arrived quickly and in perfect condition. Glad I saved a ton of money without sacrificing quality or content.

I love reading books and to have these book marks is just amazing. I am a Lord of the Rings Big Fan. Bookmark have pictures of Gandalf, Frodo & Sam, Treebeard,Wormtongue, Gollum and Balrog. Include six rings.

I took advanced patho for grad school, and I wanted some supplemental tools to help me study. This worked out great, I loved the case studies that were included, they kind of 'dumb it down' a little, make things for simple for a better understanding. I didn't want to just pass the class, I wanted to understand the information, as I will need it forever. A lot of people I know bought it and never used it, but I really enjoyed it! A in the class! =)

About the Author
Fred S. Kleiner (Ph.D., Columbia University) is the author or co-author of the 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th editions of GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES: A GLOBAL HISTORY, as well as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd editions of GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES: A CONCISE HISTORY, and more than 100 publications on Greek and Roman art and architecture, including A HISTORY OF ROMAN ART, also published by Cengage. He has taught the art history survey course for more than three decades, first at the University of Virginia and, since 1978, at Boston University, where he is currently professor of art history and archaeology. From 1985 to 1998, he was editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Archaeology. Long acclaimed for his inspiring lectures and dedication to students, Professor Kleiner won Boston University's Metcalf Award for Excellence in Teaching, as well as the College Prize for Undergraduate Advising in the Humanities in 2002, and he is a two-time winner of the Distinguished Teaching Prize in the College of Arts and Sciences Honors Program. In Great Shape!

Because I was renting this book I was a bit worriesome of the conddition I would be receivijng the book in. I received it in GREAT condition; book looks brand new! I wish I could comment on the content of the text however, reading the chapters have not been a necessity for my art history class (renaissance-baroque period). I would still suggest students to buy it to help create a good understanding of the century's influences and such but your professor will most likely cut to the chase on exactly what you need to know for your tests. At least mine does...hope this helps!
