When the editors of Ch kron, Japan's leading liberal magazine, sent the prizewinning young novelist Ishikawa Tatsuz to war-ravaged China in early 1938, they knew the independent-minded writer would produce a work wholly different from the lyrical and sanitized war reports then in circulation. They could not predict, however, that Ishikawa would write an unsettling novella so grimly realistic it would promptly be banned and lead to the author’s conviction on charges of "disturbing peace and order." Decades later, Soldiers Alive remains a deeply disturbing and eye-opening account of the Japanese march on Nanking and its aftermath. In its unforgettable depiction of an ostensibly altruistic war’s devastating effects on the soldiers who fought it and the civilians they presumed to "liberate," Ishikawa’s work retains its power to shock, inform, and provoke.

Review
"The twentieth century, and now the twenty-first, has seen brutal wars in every part of the globe. Many firsthand accounts of these conflicts have been written, but none more compelling than Soldiers Alive. . . . A landmark in war reportage."

strangely compelling
By Mr. Thao D. Vo
this is the best war novel i've ever read. the writing is brisk, the story moves quickly, the portraits of the soldiers are powerfully lucid. this novel manages to pull off an incredible feat---it makes brutal soldiers who are war criminals seem almost sympathetic (almost). the novel makes these soldiers appear almost as if they are pawns of forces much larger than themselves. the ending chapter is the best ending chapter of any book that i've read.

An Excellent Novel of the Japanese Experience in World War II
By Robert Bolton
I purchased this novel to gain some idea of what World War II was like through the eyes of the Axis. While German and Italian writers have been available for decades, in both fiction and memoirs, there has been a surprising paucity of work from the Japanese perspective, with a few exceptions like Letters From Iwo Jima. This book is not common propaganda, however. The author, Tatsuzo Ishikawa, was a journalist embedded with an army unit that participated in the Massacre of Nanking. This experience is transplanted into the novel with a group of soldiers that have just prior to the novel's opening seen combat, and will again as they enter Nanking. Although these soldiers are not good men, nor even necessarily likable ones, it shows the haunting effect certain acts of brutality can have on even the hardest of men. To compare to the novels of an earlier war, this is a novel that carries the sentiments of Erich Maria Remarque with the imagery and random violence of Ernst Junger. On the whole, I highly recommend this novel. It is a relatively quick read and creates understanding (if not pity) for a side whose experiences are rarely noted.
