Holmes and Watson persevere in their declining years

Although third in a series, this is the first of Mr. Little’s books I have encountered. From what I gather of its predecessors (based on reviews), the author has conceived a grim, if plausible, family history for Sherlock Holmes to explain his personal peculiarities. Abandoning his bees in the mid-1920s, Holmes reunites in Baker Street with Dr. Watson, where they reside with updated versions of (Lily) Hudson and (Jasper) Lestrade. Mr. Little is a facile and effective writer with an interest in ciphers. His cases—which abound with murderous Masons, pedophile prelates, renegade royals, and even a witch—are cleverly plotted and uniformly entertaining. One incorporates two legends of the British monarchy familiar from the films From Hell, Murder by Decree, and Mrs. Brown. Yet, it is a timeworn and melancholy universe that Mr. Little’s characters inhabit. His portraits of the aging detective and his even more decrepit Boswell—bickering bitterly as they cope with their infirmities, each other, and the modern world—may leave some readers yearning for the comforting Victorian milieu of Conan Doyle.

My thanks to Steve and Timi at MX Publishing for my review copy of this book. You are the custodians of all things Sherlock Holmes!
This is the second volume in a series that began with The Musical Murders. As I said in that review, the secret of how these stories were found is a solid one. They were written by Doctor Watson, submitted to the Strand and rejected. Because of their content, they were hidden away in Baker Street, discovered only when it was remodeled.
In these stories, Holmes and Watson are in their early seventies and have moved back to 221B. Mrs. Hudson’s niece Lily, (newly married to Jasper Lestrade, son of Holmes’ old sparring partner and also a policeman) is their housekeeper and landlord. Holmes has again fallen into the grip of cocaine and sometimes seems on the edge of insanity...
I give the book five stars! And now on to each story as they are presented:
“Sherlock Holmes and the Shepherd’s Bushman” How does the death of Bullfrog Mulbagaroo, an Aborigine from Australia, tie into a secret mining fraud? The man is killed by a switchblade at the very door to 221B…
“Sherlock Holmes and the Acton Body Snatchers” begins with a series of missing boys. They vanished regularly until a certain point, and have now resumed after a twenty year hiatus. The kids are traced to an encounter with an odd bookseller. But why have they started again after twenty years?
“Sherlock Holmes and the Notting Hill Rapist” has Holmes square off with the mysterious Jack the Stripper. This serial killer is killing prostitutes, stealing their unborn children, and leaving the bodies displayed with brands on their backs…
“Sherlock Holmes and the Clapham Witch” deals with two men’s suicide from the same spot at Clapham Junction. The men died by leaping in front of a train. As Holmes investigates, an old friend and colleague does the same. There is an old woman who haunts the area, quoting from the three witches in The Scottish Play. Is a grey cat to blame for bewitching the three men?
“Sherlock Holmes and the Battersea Fetishists” dives into the world of Freemasonry. A high ranking Mason in Mycroft Holmes’ Battersea Lodge is discovered dead. There are symbolic details to the crime, the murder weapons being a sharpened trowel, a pair of dividing compass, and a square—all symbols of Freemasonry…
Each case has wonderful moments and digs into areas where the Watson of the Victorian Era would never have delved. I look forward to more by this author!
