About the Author
Francis D.K. Ching is the bestselling author of numerous books on architecture and design, including Architecture: Form, Space, and Order, A Global History of Architecture, Architectural Graphics, A Visual Dictionary of Architecture, and Interior Design Illustrated, all published by Wiley. His works have been translated into over sixteen languages and are regarded as classics for their renowned graphic presentation. He is a registered architect and Professor Emeritus at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Fantastic primer on construction.

I wanted to purchase this book for professional and personal edification.
This is a terrific source of information that is well-organized and well presented. There is a newer edition, but most of the information hasn't changed significantly so the older edition is not inherently out of date and useless.
Although I did consider a Kindle edition, this book is so rich with graphics that I would recommend getting the paperback edition because it is far easier to read and understand.
You will not go wrong with this book, and I learned so much about construction materials, technique and choices that I am far more knowledgeable than I was before purchase. This is a must have for professionals, but for the savvy consumer of contracting services, this is a good way of understanding what a contractor or designer is getting you into when engaging their services. An armed consumer is a richer consumer (armed with knowledge of course!)

don't buy for kindle

Don't buy a kindle version of this book.
Image resolution is very low that you can't even read illustration.
They should scan it with high resolution and kindle should have zoom-in tool!

Very useful for understanding small-scale construction

The first edition was entirely hand-drawn (the 2nd ed. may be as well) and covers the difference between a hip and a gable roof, slabs, grade beams and other details of modern construction. If you want to know the difference between western platform and balloon framing, this is a fine book. It's primarily a reference book, but it could be read cover to cover.
