His life is his monument.

The perfect introduction. This is the perfect book for someone who wants to learn the essentials about the life and work of Mahatma Gandhi without having to wade through some of the larger books that have been written. This one is under 200 pages, and is laid out in three easy to read sections (From Birth To Greatness - Gandhi In India - Victory and Tragedy). Fischer does not bog down into political minutiae, post-assassination trial stuff, or hair-splitting Gandhi-isms (on this latter point for instance, Gandhi's own autobiography devotes four consecutive chapters to his internal agony over whether or not to include goat's milk in his vegetarian diet)! Fischer's book is more of an OVERVIEW of the profound world-shaking life that was Gandhi. Yet it is immensely informative, and well-paced. The author personally met with Gandhi in 1942 and again in '46, and his book shows that he had a wonderful understanding of the Mahatma's faith and convictions. Those who want to know more about Gandhi should, however, go on to read the autobiography (subtitled "The Story of My Experiments With Truth") and also Yogesh Chadha's "Gandhi: A Life".
The book ends abruptly with the three shots, the smile fading from Gandhi's face, and his final words on earth "Oh God."
"His legacy is courage, his lesson truth, his weapon love.
His life is his monument.
He now belongs to mankind."
We turn the page, and hope that something is there... but it isn't. The world since, has not seen anyone like Gandhi.

Courage and Truth

This is one of the best biographies I've ever read, in part because of the enormous charisma of the subject and in equal part because of the obvious respect and affection with which he is treated by his biographer, Louis Fischer. Gandhi's life and message can be a life-changing experience for one willing to think about his search for Truth, and his unwillingness to compromise even in the face of seemingly insurmountable opposition.
When I decided to read up on Ghandi's life, I was confronted with many many volumes. I didn't know which to choose, so I bought several, in hopes that at least one would be a good choice. I needn't have worried. This particular volume is small and thin, and I selected it in part because of its size - a thicker volume on a man I knew nothing about would have been too intimidating for a first exposure. What a wonderful surprise! Fischer's story of Gandhi's life was engaging from the first few paragraphs and riveting through Gandhi's last utterance.
Fischer does not analyze very much - this is not a history of Gandhi's influence on India and the wider world; rather, it is the personal story of a man who touched lives. Mohandas Gandhi is presented in the context of his world rather than Gandhi's world being presented in the context of him. To me, that creates a more approachable man, one whose life can be emulated, not just revered. This is a must-read with the potential to become a must-do, or at least a must-think. Highly recommended.

A Must Read on the Life of Gandhi

Written by a foreign correspondant and author of many books on world affairs, this book is the best place to begin understanding the life of Gandhi. I used it to supplement the Oscar-winning film and found that the two complemented each other very well. It is a short book. In a matter of hours the reader will not only be introduced to the events of Gandhi's life and of the Indian independance movement, but she will also get inside the man. Fischer carefully considers Gandhi's religious convictions and experiences and thereby tries to explain Gandhi's incredible moral authority, both during his lifetime, and beyond. If you wonder why so many people consider Gandhi the most influential human being of the 20th century, read this book. And then be prepared to reexamine your own life. What do I value? Why? What is my purpose in life? What does it mean to be a just, compassionate, and merciful human being? Is a violent response to evil ever justifiable? Reading this inexpensive, 200-page paperback will pay rich dividends.

About the Author
JOSH BESS is a percussionist, electronic performing artist, and Ableton Live Certified Trainer. Performing with multiple artists and employing a wide variety of styles, he is experienced in jazz, funk, Latin, pop, rock, and more. In addition to performing, Bess developed an interest in music production and went on to earn his college degree in audio engineering and jazz commercial performance. He has fused his knowledge and his ear for audio production with his percussive background to develop an efficient and creative electronic workflow - a combination that he regularly puts to work in his compositions and live performances.

This book was everything I was looking for in terms of drum programming and creating a GROOVE for any genre. A must in my opinion on any producer/musicians desk regardless of skill level.

LONG OVERDUE Instruction for Drum Programming!!!!

LOVE this book! Perfect for anyone who is new to drum/step programming and/or wants to learn how to program in different styles. The book covers multiple genres from House to Dubstep to Trap and NuCumbia (who knew?) and has maybe 300+ grids(patterns) for use in any drum sampler/programmer with audio/midi examples (downloadable) so you can hear what it sounds like before programming if you'd like. The book utilizes Ableton to demonstrate the grids and the first two chapters but you can use it with any DAW (I use Maschine and Logic). What I really appreciate however is the explanations for each example as it gives you a brief history of the genre as well as insight on how to incorporate and even change up patterns for your own use. So thankful for this book as this type of instruction is for most considered "secret knowledge"-not anymore ;)

Beyond this, your only other investment outside of quality sounds will be practice time.

The book is very helpful and gets you started on music production grooves but, I could not for the life of me get the downloaded media content to work in Ableton, and that's the software it recommends to use. The only drawback to this is that the exercises tell you to use specific instruments so you're stuck choosing your own instruments to replace what the book suggests.

Mr. Williams presentation is clear and easy to follow. The text is well thought out and organized into separate chapters covering major design topics. He has taken the time to ferret out all the pertinent footnotes and includes them in the appropriate sections. His summaries and tables are worth the price of admission alone. If you are taking the SE Exam .... Get this book.

I would recomend this book to anyone who struggles to help their kids with math or is having a hard time with math. It is a fun approach to a very dull subject for most people. No fear math and no fear algebra are great.

This morbidly fascinating memoir-in-comics is one of the more frightening recollections of childhood bullying you're likely ever ever read. Rall grew up in the 1970s in Kettering, Ohio ("suburb of the damned"), a town of stunning homogeneity that concealed an undercurrent of absurd intolerance. An intelligent, "brown-haired, brown-eyed freak" with divorced parents and a French mother, Rall was routinely vilified by his unambitious, intellectual-hating classmates and relentlessly beaten and harassed by Brian, a strange and brutal kid he first encountered in junior high. Brian made Rall's life miserable for no discernible reason other than Rall's superficial social difference. Smaller than Brian and fearful of him, Rall was nevertheless equally cruel, devising indirect but gruesomely violent counterattacks. Rall's mother was powerless to stop these daily clashes, school officials were weirdly indifferent and the strange, primal conflict continued into high school. Puberty miraculously added eight inches and 12 pounds to Rall's frame, and he finally beat Brian into a bloody, senseless heap in the school hallway. Presented in Rall's angularly comic b&w drawings, the story alternates between a quirky poignancy and a thoughtful but bleak humor. With irony and introspection, Rall examines the effects of this bizarre experience on his development. YA-Political and social-commentary cartoonist Rall offers a fictionalized slice of his junior and senior high school experiences with the class bully. Because his story is told entirely from the perspective and with all the insight of the teenaged male protagonist, not only is the profanity profuse but other possibly offensive, yet realistically on-target, vocabulary abounds. Brian Koff may have been a bully but clearly young Rall offered him opportunity and excuse: the narrator shows himself to be somewhat conceited, defiantly classist, and ready to lash out with assorted weaponry. He hospitalizes Brian, plans his murder, and continues to demonstrate his own abilities to draw enemy blood all the way through high school. This is testosterone-driven fantasy in part, perhaps, but as anyone who remembers the cruel underbelly of adolescence can attest, events like the ones recorded here can be as much a part of the local school hallway culture as pinup pictures of movie stars. Rall's introduction memorializes a high school friend who chose suicide over responding with violence against his tormentors. Is there another way? Of course, but in real life, sometimes it is just plain impossible for kids to see that adolescence with all its evils isn't a permanent condition. Will this book speak to high school readers? Absolutely! But adults who have forgotten how gruesome those years can be also need to read it.

Known for his acerbic political cartoons, Rall turns his caustic gaze inward in an autobiographical graphic novel about his misery in junior high in suburban Ohio. He was an alienated nerd, tormented by a loutish, psychotic bully who, for no apparent reason, chose Rall as his personal victim. Teachers and other adults refused to help Rall, leaving him to deal with Brian through violence that started out defensive but gradually turned sadistically vengeful. The escalating battle forced Rall into an ultimate assault that he then saw as the only way to prevent being marked as a victim for the rest of his life. Two decades later, a more introspective Rall ponders the lasting effect of Brian's harassment on his personality. To this day, Rall's behavior remains confrontational and defensive; he wonders whether his superior attitude prompted the bully's abuse. Rall's memoir is fueled by the bitterness and anger that inform his editorial cartoons and sports their vaguely cubist figures and distinctive scratchboard technique that makes them look like punk woodcuts. Brilliant and true

I moved to the States from Alaska at about the same time as Ted Rall was in HS, to finish high school. This comic is the only thing I can think of that ever captured that era - [impolite word] "Dazed and Confused" for example.
I should add that the high school I went to (in Wisconsin) was a (Lutheran) theocracy to rival anything in Iran. While I was constantly getting beat on by a gang of openly white supremacist kids at the school, which was quite backward by Alaskan standards, I usually got the flack from school officials who were chummy with them. Other than the extremes of the ultraviolence, I think people should think twice before thinking this is some kind of exaggeration for effect by Rall. Ted Rall's visual style is great, too, and I was happy to see that people who bought My War with Brian also read Ruben Bollings, another superb comic genius. I think Rall is a good representative of us 30-somethings born in the 60s, too - a more or less Lost Generation between the baby-boomers and their echo generation, but which includes the whole Brat Pack and cartoonists like Tom Tomorrow, Rall, and, I believe, Bollings.

Just when you think Ted Rall's, "My War with Brian," is going to be another run-of-the-mill victim story about bullying, this autobiographic tale takes a surprising shift when the misfit geek decides to fight back in shockingly savage fashion. And thus begins a full fledged war spanning the eternal length of time during Junior High and High School where Ted Rall learns to be a man, standing up for himself and exacting due punishment to those who strike at him, consequences be damned. At times, laugh out loud funny, this book will also shock in reminding you how brutal kids/teens can be to one another - the physical cruelty that Ted and Brian exact on one another is frightening in its murderous intent but just past that initial layer of shock comes a somewhat disturbing reminder of the cruelties adolescents face as they transition to adulthood.
