About the Author

Bruce R. Barringer holds the Johnny D. Pope Entrepreneurship Chair in the Department of Entrepreneurship at Oklahoma State University. He earned his PhD from the University of Missouri and his MBA from Iowa State University. His research interests include feasibility analysis, firm growth, corporate entrepreneurship, and the impact of interorganizational relationships on business organizations. Over the years, he has worked with a number of technology-based incubators and student-led entrepreneurship activities and clubs. He serves on the editorial review board of Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice and Journal of Small Business Management. His work has been published in Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Management, Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of Small Business Management, Journal of Developmental Entrepreneurship, and Quality Management Journal. Bruce’s outside interests include running, trail biking, and swimming.

Ireland R. Duane is a University Distinguished Professor and holds the Conn Chair in New Ventures Leadership in the Mays Business School, Texas A&M University. Previously, he served on the faculties at University of Richmond, Baylor University, and Oklahoma State University. His research interests include strategic entrepreneurship, corporate entrepreneurship, strategic alliances, and effectively managing organizational resources. Duane’s research has been published in journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Executive, Strategic Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, Journal of Management, Journal of Business Venturing, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, and Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal among others. He is a co-author of both scholarly books and textbooks, including best-selling strategic management texts. Along with Dr. Mike Morris (Syracuse University), Duane serves as a co-editor for the Prentice Hall Entrepreneurship Series. These books offer in-depth treatments of specific entrepreneurship topics, such as Business Plans for Entrepreneurs (authored by Bruce Barringer). Duane has served or is serving on the editorial review boards for a number of journals, including AMJ, AMR, AME, JOM, JBV, and ETP. He just completed a term as Editor for AMJ. He has completed terms as an associate editor for AME and as a consulting editor for ETP and has served as a guest co-editor for special issues of a number of journals including AMR, AME, and SMJ. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Management and a Fellow of the Strategic Management Society. He is the current Vice President and Program Chair for the Academy of Management. Excellent read

Bruce Barringer and company did a magnificant job in writing this textbook. Each chapter was outlined phenomenally and the writing style of each was easy to comprehend. There was a great balance between text and visuals which was really beneficial as well. Also, I really enjoyed the features throughout the text that amplified the ups and downs of real-life business ventures. One final note I'd like to make is how there were a lot of great additional resources (helpful websites, trade show suggestions, businesses that provide specific information) to help in starting a venture.
I don't give 5 stars too often but this textbook deserves it.

Insightful textbook, but very limited use rights on Kindle

This textbook offers insightful information about the entrepreneurial process. While the editing could use some work, the content is relatively current and easy to digest. However, be warned: the Kindle eBook version only allows use on 2 simultaneous devices. Apparently, this is set by the publisher (Prentice Hall). If you are like most modern students with a laptop, tablet, phone, etc., it may be difficult to get the content where you need it when you need it.

I bought this book for an entrepreneurship class, and I don't regret using it at all. It had plenty of useful information in it, but just as anything business-related, it's extremely wordy and takes forever to read. I ended up reading the first few sentences of every paragraph rather and getting about the same information out of it.

Fits the need

Was looking for a theory book to help a struggling college theory student. This explains things more simply than a typical college level textbook. Works for students who had not yet grasped the fundamentals.

Concise and easy to understand

I bought this book to learn the elements of music and to try to understand why I liked certain styles of music. I can play the piano at the intermediate level by just playing the notes on the sheet music, but didn't really understand how the music was put together so could not add anything to the music of my own. This book helped me understand all the key elements of music and what "usually" sounds good and what "usually" doesn't go too well together. Although it gets fairly technical, Marc Schonbrun does a very good job of explaining some arcane (but important!) music theory with a sense of humor and a common touch which does not intimidate the non-professional reader. Recommended especially for those, like me, who took up an instrument late in life and learned how to play by sheer determination but lacks the theoretical knowledge to advance their playing abilities.

Not a great choice for real world application of music theory...

So I guess I am going to be the first less than glowing review for this book. I have been putting off writing this review for a while. I am a full time guitarist and guitar instructor with almost 40 years of overall experience. I usually use the MI Book "Harmony and Theory" text book with my students. It is still the most concise and real world music theory book I have found. However, it does skip a couple of concepts that I find curious. so I bought this book to check it out as a possible source for my students.

First off, I think you need tight and tidy definitions for important basic concepts. These music definitions MUST be in agreement with what the ear perceives. Good definitions must also be applicable and useful for the student to apply to their music. This book falls way short on those points, in my opinion. All of the definitions given in the book are the typical academic "music speak" stuff that are frankly not CLEAR for the untrained to understand. The chapter on Intervals is especially unclear. What the hell is an "Advanced" interval? Seriously? Intervals are intervals. There are basically two ways to calculate them and this book muddles those two methods together in a very unclear way.

The book also lacks exercises for the student to work out and practice. It spends so much time on "Lecturing" on the subject but does not have the student apply the lessons. The MI book is vastly superior in this regard.

I am sorry for giving a negative review to a fellow musician and educator but I really do not care for this book.

Immanuel Ness has provided readers with a new perspective about workers struggle in the Global South in the age of neo-liberal globalization. Too often scholars tend to focus on workers struggles in North America, Western Europe, and Eastern Europe and marginalize workers struggles and movements in the Global South. This book is ground breaking in that it the scholars and activists have shown that workers in the Global South are leading the way in organizing, mobilizing, and educating workers in other countries on how to build new forms of working people organizations across lines of class, race, ethnicity, and gender and also on the strategies and tactics on how to struggle against Global capitalism and also on how to create alternative forms of economic development.

Groundbreaking analysis of global class struggle

This is a groundbreaking rethinking of global class struggle. Ness' analysis of worker self-organization in India and China is sure to provoke a reassessment of the capacity to circulate workers struggles in way few are attempting to do. Those bemoaning the de-industrialization and financialization of the wealthy countries overlook that the industrial work hasn't disappeared but has been relocated and even expanded financied by capital outflows thanks to neoliberal deregulation and the undoing of capital controls. As Ness demonstrates, there are even more industrial workers today than when de-industrialization began in the 1970s.
Ness' analysis is most compelling when he draws a parallel between western sectoral unions to the one official union in China that plays a key role in channeling and restricting worker self-organization to the local plant level thereby inhibiting the potential to circulate the countless local struggles nationally let alone to the rest of the same industrial region. This Chinese union is not as exceptional as we might think as western unions play a similar role in managing and channeling worker self-organization into local contracts and wage demands thereby impeding the wider circulation of struggle. Pure genius!

Professor Ness, a prolific chronicler of the working class, has produced another definitive work. His account of the direct action of workers in the global south (India, South Africa and China) shows that despite the decline of traditional trade unions, particularly in the US, working class insurgency is alive and well. In the face of extraordinary exploitation, forced migration and deplorable living living conditions, he shows that mobilized workers are still capable of producing effective representative organizations outside traditional union structures. This agitation has allowed them to exert direct influence on global capital and over traditional labor organizations. This book is meticulously researched and compelling read. It is a must read for activists and students of the global economy!

Compact "Introduction"

A small book concerning Edward Levi's theory on legal reasoning. The size is perfectly compact, but don't let that fool you. Levi's reasoning takes serious concentration to follow. By no means an "introduction" to the law, you should have a fairly good grasp on the workings of the court system before trying to finish this. The excellent new foreword to this edition by Schauer helps give needed context. Recommended for anyone heading to law school or interested in legal theory.

Not sure what Connolly's intention was with writing this book ...

Not sure what Connolly's intention was with writing this book, but his efforts failed for me. Large parts of the subject matter is not just common sense, rather dead obvious. He advises to listen actively, don't write the details, abbreviate, etc which most of us have been told since grade school. Some of the more critical topics were skimmed over with little to no explanation or examples. For example, the advice on mind maps was about one page long with one visual aid. It might show use for some, wasn't to me.

Very basic

This book would be more beneficial to have included some example images or drawings of the methods described. Such a vital ingredient that was overlooked. Therefore I have given it a low ranking.

Useful introduction for perhaps high school students although they may likely use software for such tasks from here on.
