Therme Vals, the spa complex built in the Swiss Alps by celebrated architect Peter Zumthor, became an icon of contemporary architecture soon after its opening in 1996. Inspired by the spa’s majestic surroundings, Zumthor built the structure on the sharp grade of an Alpine mountain slope with grass-topped roofs to mimic Swiss meadows, captured here in a series of sumptuous images. Peter Zumthor Therme Vals, the only book-length study of this singular building, features the architect’s own original sketches and plans for its design as well as Hélène Binet’s striking photographs of the structure. Architectural scholar Sigrid Hauser contributes an essay on such topics as “Artemis/Diana,” “Baptism,” “Mikvah,” and “Spring”—drawing out the connections between the elemental nature of the spa and mythology, bathing, and purity.
Annotations by Peter Zumthor on his design concept and the building process elucidate the structure’s symbiotic relationship to its natural surroundings, revealing, for example, why he insisted on using locally quarried stone. Therme Vals’s scenic design elements, and Zumthor’s contributions to this book, reflect the architect’s commitment to the essential and his disdain for needless architectural flourishes. This lavishly illustrated volume about the spa that catapulted a remote Swiss village onto the international architecture scene will entrance all enthusiasts of contemporary design.

Through the essential toward the substance
By Alex
The best documentation of an architectural project I have ever seen. This great architect will be remembered for a good reason. This book shows at least some reason why his work shines through all.
This book documents how the project was conceived and developed. It includes beautiful photographs, conceptual sketches, and working drawings by Zumthor's studio. These certainly help us understand his design methodology. It is neither pedantic nor pretentious. Explanations are clear and easy to understand.
His attention to detail comes from his strong focus on design goals and design principles established along the process. Design goals are set based on conceptual developments which were informed by inspirations. He talks about the importance of inspirational images when he gets into a project. He looks deep into a way to realize an inspiration/ a desire into an architectural reality. He seems to be dedicated to executing the basic well in this process but, the basic doesn't mean plain and simple. Nothing he describes is really new or particularly brilliant/ innovative. Of course, Zumthor's architecture cannot be reduced to a phrase, "basics well done". But, one cannot help thinking how important it is to execute the basic well from design to construction with a clear intention.
On the one hand, one senses the stubbornness of the architect while reading this book. On the other, you will recognize that his focus and uncompromising standards really do make a difference in the end. Perhaps, his seriousness might be called so German or Swiss in a way, although this type of generalization is always problematic. In an age filled with gimmicks, deceits, twists, and rhetorical prowess, his pursuit of "content" (substance) and unrelenting efforts to make a lasting impact on built environments is admirable to say the least. Highly recommended.

Excellent copy! I was recently in Vals in September and wanted to buy it there for my boyfriend's 30th birthday (Vals is his mecca), but did not have space in my small luggage for it. I bought it online and it was waiting for him when we got back from our trip!

Required Reading for Contemporory Architects
By Steve
This is an absolutely beautiful book on one of the paramount architectural works of the late 20th century. Not only does it contain the standard monograph materials (sketches, photographs) but the essays on bathing and its place in history and culture are excellent. Hauser and Zumthor have collaborated to make a seminal book on architecture which, when compared to Zumthor's Works book, is a steal at around $100 US.
